I Didn't Plan to Be a Recruiter. I Planned to Change the World.

I studied Theater at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. I worked in Sales at a legacy theater arts publication. I spent time at the world-famous William Morris Agency trying to figure out if being an Agent was where I fit. What I kept coming back to through all of it was a feeling — that I wanted my work to matter beyond a transaction. That the world had more urgent needs than I was helping with, and that I wanted to contribute to helping.

Taking a Junior Recruiter role at Professionals for Non-Profits turned out to be the decision that changed everything. It was somewhat by chance — but I discovered I could take what I genuinely loved about Sales — understanding what someone needs, finding the right match, making a connection that creates real value — and put it in service of something meaningful. Fifteen years later, that's still what gets me up in the morning.

Over that time I've built deep relationships across the sector — with Executive Directors, CFOs, COOs, Directors of Development, Directors of Programs, Human Resource Directors, and Board Members — as both candidates and clients. Some of those client relationships have spanned years and dozens of senior placements. The most meaningful has been an eight-year partnership with Equality Now, which led to me being referred to conduct an Executive Director search for Musawah, a Muslim women's rights organization based in Malaysia. That search — working across culture, geography, and language to find the right leader — is the kind of work I was built for.

What I've learned is that recruiting for nonprofits is a fundamentally different discipline. The people you're looking for aren't primarily motivated by compensation — they're motivated by mission. And the organizations hiring them are often working within real budget constraints. That means the Recruiter's job isn't just to find qualified candidates. It's to understand what drives each person, to speak directly to the spark that brought them to this sector, and to honestly and compellingly connect them to the specific mission and opportunity in front of them. That's a skill. One I've spent 15 years developing.

What Clients Say

Trusted by Nonprofit Leaders

I worked with Nick Samuels for over eight years while I was Global Executive Director at Equality Now. Nick helped us build our team with stellar C-suite and manager-level candidates including in Programs, Communications, Fundraising, Operations and Finance. He listens well and attentively and only brings forward candidates that would be a good fit. He worked diligently with my team and was thoughtful and caring in his approach. I have continued to use his help to find the new head of Musawah in the Middle East as a board member to the organization. He was a trusted resource and I recommend him highly.
Yasmeen Hassan
Former Global Executive Director, Equality Now
I started working with Nick nearly 10 years ago on nonprofit placements. The first hire he helped me make was for a Director of Development, and that hire and placement turned out to be the most impactful placement of my career. My partnership with this hire has spanned two organizations and nearly 9 years supporting significant growth for both of the organizations we have worked with and millions of dollars raised. Since then, I have worked with Nick on countless successful hires from Program Managers, to Director of Operations, and other mid-level program and development professionals. What sets Nick apart from any other recruiter I’ve worked with is his unique ability to listen and understand the organization and position needs. His ability to hone in and find the right candidates is unmatched across my 20+ years in the sector. I could not recommend Nick more for your nonprofit hiring needs. He is an incredible thought partner — and a genuinely good human.
Kristen E. Baldwin
President and Executive Director, Edible Schoolyard NYC
We’ve successfully used Nick for key senior-level searches in Fundraising, Finance, and HR. He has a strong ability to find and present truly viable candidates — people we would seriously consider and have hired. He’s done an excellent job for us.

Are You a Nonprofit Leader Exploring What's Next?

Many of the senior nonprofit professionals I work with aren't actively job searching — they're simply open to the right conversation. If you're a Director, VP, CFO, or Executive Director who's curious about what's out there, I'd genuinely like to connect.

I've spent 15 years getting to know this community. I understand what motivates people in this sector — it's rarely just compensation. When I reach out about a role, it's because I've thought carefully about whether it's a genuine fit for where you are and what you care about. I won't waste your time.
